From a big family of painters, including his brother the famous Albert Moore whom Whistler admired so greatly, Henry Moore was capable of magical effects with a confident touch. The larger paintings are splendid, but his oil studies on this scale are quickly done and were as greatly valued in his time as they are now. It is hard to tell where this one was painted.
