This drawing of Rothenstein, under whom Lawrence studied at the Royal College of Art, was done in 1923 when Lawrence was 30. In that same year he was awarded the Prix de Rome and left the Royal College to study at the British School in Rome.
Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) was the highly influential principal of the Royal College of Art 1920-35. A close friend of Orpen and John, he published his early memoir Men and Memories in 1931, the same year as his knighthood.
