Edward Clifford (1844-1907)
This strange picture, a parable of Christian generosity, is of Lady Mount Temple (on the right), receiving a gift from Janet Symonds, wife of JA Symonds, and sister of the watercolourist Marianne North.
From a magazine cutting in the Symonds family archive (see image) we know the title is The Gift, and it is explained thus: 'The rich lady has lived for the poor. The poor woman has only one treasure in the world - her family relic, which love and gratitude now compel her to surrender. So Christ has lived and died for us, and we cannot withhold the casket of our lives from His blessed service. May many, like the pearls that adorn the neck or the oranges the tree, become the fruit of our labours and the jewels in His Crown.'
Edward Clifford was a friend of the Symonds's and 'had been lifted out of the struggling life of a young unknown artist by the kindness and friendship' of Lady Mount-Temple. He was a friend of and a studio assistant of Burne-Jones.
