Honor C. Appleton (1879-1951)
Honor C. Appleton’s illustrations have appeared in over a dozen children’s books, from HC Cradock’s Josephine series, to collections of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales (1926). Whimsical and bold, her lively, often humorous depictions of children are also deeply observant, grounded in a sympathetic understanding of the romance and realities of childhood. While the caption accompanying this particular illustration doesn’t seem to derive from any published works illustrated by Appleton, the boy’s outfit closely resembles the figure of ‘Little Thumbling’ featured in her imagining of Perrault’s Fairy Tales (1911).
