Literature
J.G. Millais, Life and Letters of Sir John Everett Millais, Methuen and Co., London, 1899, illus. vol. II just before the appendix listing works by Millais.
This drawing is for an etching illustrating a genealogy by James Bertrand Payne (1833-1898), An Armorial of Jersey (first published in 1859); the section on the Millais family was published separately as The Lineage and Pedigree of the family of Millais in 1865, also illustrated by the coat of arms. Millais came from an old Jersey family.
In a letter to Payne dated 12 July 1862 Millais wrote;
'Dear Payne, I have got the arms etched and I think you will like the plate - I could not possibly find time to do it myself so I got it done by a good man artistically - shall I send it or will you [illegible] when passing [illegible] JE Millais'
With an earlier preparatory drawing, and a proof impression of the etching.
