The names of Rothenstein's many sitters read as a Who's Who of the early 20th century, from Albert Einstein and TS Eliot, to Aubrey Beardsley, Thomas Hardy, and John Singer Sargent. Here, a more modest sitter: William's 8-year-old brother. Albert (who adopted the anglicised name Rutherston) followed in his brother's footsteps and trained as an artist, working as an illustrator and set designer, as well as holding one-man shows. The pair remained close, with Albert editing the 1923 biography of William, in which he explains that Rothenstein's "portraits are not arrangements first and foremost - they are like particular people, as his landscapes are like particular places, at particular seasons, with the local characteristics emphasised, not generalised ... It goes deeper ... and looks above all for the spirit, the vitality which has moulded them" (William Rothenstein, pp 12-13) .
