Violet Victoria Butler (1888-1980)
Provenance
Philip Furley Fyson (Botanist and author of Flora of the South Indian Hills)
Violet Butler first visited India in 1920, when her husband Wing Commander Maurice Henry Butler was stationed in Delhi. Upon her return to London, the artist worked mainly as a portrait miniaturist, carrying out commissions for book publishers, royalty, and families who had suffered losses in the Great War's wake. This watercolour painted along the banks of the Godavari River belonged to Botanist PF Fyson, author of Flora of the South Indian Hill Stations, amongst other studies of Indian plant life.
