We are told that the scene is from an escarpment overlooking the River Esk in Yorkshire, not far from Whitby, near the village of Lealholm, overlooking Crunkly Ghyll. Grimshaw lived near Leeds, but at one point also had a house in Scarborough and often painted around Whitby twenty miles to the north. As he matured, the misty, rainy weather in Grimshaw’s work lifted somewhat, and the sun came out occasionally. This large painting is in his lighter manner.
