John Brett (1831-1902)
MacLeod's Maidens, Skye (natural sculpture)
Cull was best known for his pictures of British warships, and painted several for Edward VII. Much travelled with the Navy, he performed 'almost every job on a warship, including stoking, so that I may thoroughly know my subject" (Daily Mirror, 14 Nov 1911, p 5).
This more peaceful picture would have been painted near his home in Lee-on-Solent.
