Roy Spencer trained as an architect before studying at the Chelsea School of Art in the 1950s. While his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and New English Art Club, he also worked as a commercial artist for House and Garden magazine, amongst other publications. His portrait was painted by Paul Wyeth in 1953, and by Edward Hall in 1955.
