John G. Wilson, publisher
A typical subject of a poor mother and child set in Newlyn or Brittany about 1910 from this watercolourist and etcher, much influenced by Bastien Lepage, of whom A.L. Baldry said, 'In his water-colours [he is] an absolute purist; he paints entirely with transparent pigments, and never has recourse to opaque colours. His brushwork is broad and confident'. (The Studio, vol 36, no 154, Jan 1906). Hankey made an etching of the greater part of this watercolour in 1909.
