Tobit Roche was born in Manchester in 1954. While his early childhood was spent in Hong Kong and Canada, he later moved to India, which became his spiritual home. He started painting at an early age, studying at Ontario College of Art from 1974 to 1976 and continuing at Camberwell, graduating in 1980. His early mentor was Duncan Grant, a lifelong friend of his father.
Tobit paints both abstracts and landscapes; the Himalayas and the sea are recurring themes, done both on site and in his Brixton studio from small oil sketches or memory. Working across his canvases slowly and carefully, he builds up layers and glazes with his hands to create a rich bed of paint. His magical landscapes are in the British romantic landscape tradition, and evocative exercises in mood and feeling.
