EXHIBITED: Royal Academy, 1879, no. 458
An early self portrait, in 16th Century dress, in homage to Dutch ‘Golden Age’ portraiture. In 1879, the year this painting was shown at the Royal Academy, La Thangue won the RA’s Gold Medal for Historical Painting with another picture. Armed with £25 prize money and the recommendation of Leighton, the President of the RA, he joined Gérôme’s atelier at the École des Beaux- Arts in Paris the following year, and went to Brittany in the early 1880s. There his style matured in the impres- sionistic manner of Bastien-Lepage, which he then imported on his return to England, showing at the New English Art Club.
